So for those of you who haven’t heard this story from the beginning, here’s a brief rundown.
LJ and I met about 5 years ago through one of my sorority sisters at ASU. He was Pre-Med, I was pre-…something. We dated for a few months then broke up when he left for Med School. We lost contact for almost 4 years. Then through the miracle of Myspace we reconnected and rekindled. A few months later I moved to Houston to be closer to him and we’ve never looked back.
In November/December 2008 we started talking a little more seriously about the possibility of getting married. In early December we even did a little ring shopping and found one we both liked. Then on Christmas day he asked my Dad for his blessing (which I’m pretty sure was given).
***Now on to the actual Engagement Bit***
In February we were making some plans. LJ was going to be on call for Valentine’s day but was going to be off the weekend before so we decided to have our Valentine’s day that weekend instead. We decided to go to the Kemah Boardwalk to a restaurant that we’ve been to before and both really like. It was a Hibachi Grill (Ichibon-style for all my San Angelo folks) and we had a very nice meal with pleasant company.
After dinner we went down for a walk on the boardwalk and ended up sitting on a bench for a few minutes. It was a chilly evening and we cuddled a bit. At one point he asked me if I was happy. I looked at him and smiled and said “Yes, I’m very happy.” Then he said, “Good ‘cuz I don’t think there’s anything else I could do to make you happy.”
*** Now before I go on…I need to tell you that I had vowed earlier in the evening not to talk about the wedding or the ring or anything like that.***
So at this last statement I’m struggling to bite my tongue and to stop myself from breaking my vow of wedding-bliss silence. He sees my struggle and says “Just say it.” I shake my head (bite harder on my tongue – ouch) and say “No…no I’m not going to.” He persisted. “Just say it…it’s ok…just say it.” My willpower broke and I finally said “BLING!”
He laughed and said “What’s your deal with Bling?” I said “It’s not about the bling it’s about what the bling means.” He paused for a second and then pulled off his ASU College Class Ring and handed it to me. “Here…maybe you can wear this for a while. Just wrap some tape around it.” I laughed at how huge the ring was on my finger, but played along for a while and joked that we could size it down and that it might just work.
After a few minutes of this he said “Or you can trade me for this…” and pulled out the real ring box. He opened it, then got down on one knee (By this point the tears were flowing) and said “I know you’ve put a lot of faith in me already, but I’m gonna ask you to put just a little more faith in me right now…Will you marry me?”
Of course I said yes and we hugged and kissed and he put the ring on my finger…it fit PERFECTLY…and then he stopped a couple who were passing by and said “Excuse me sir, ma’am. Would you mind taking a picture of us…I just asked her to marry me and she said yes!” After we took the picture, we proceeded to make about a million phone calls. So YAY!! We’re ENGAGED!!
Awww... sweet. (The sb room stil impresses me more, though.) ;)
